Profiles in Courage Award, 1986

The Kennedy Society has decided to award His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain with John F. Kennedy's book "Profiles in Courage" for the year 1986.
For his courageous commitment for freedom and democracy for the reasons, which are expressed in His Majesty's own speeches:
For his positive, personal commitment to Spain's development from
an authoritarian regime to becoming a democracy.
"The people of Spain have a wish to base their society on the same values as the Danes: “Freedom, justice, equality and political pluralism."
For his courageous and crucial contribution during the attempted military coup 23 February 1981, where he saved and strengthened Spain's young democracy.
"Monarchy, which is the symbol of unity and constancy of the nation, cannot tolerate any acts or attitudes, which attempt to break up the democratic process."
For his clearly expressed respect for fundamental human rights in Spain as well as in the rest of the world.
"Spain vigorously supports the full display of human rights everywhere, whereever they are threatened".
- His Majesty's statements are from Copenhagen, March 1980; Madrid, February 1981 and Moscow, May 1984. The quotations are from “Berlingske Tidende,” “Time” and “TheTimes.”
